Every post in this series so far has looked downward, at soil structure, biology, and water movement, but grazing intensity, the variable running through most of this site's research, is set above ground, and a sward stick or rising plate meter is the standard tool for measuring it consistently enough to make real decisions from.

The steps

  1. Walk a consistent pattern across the whole field. A W shaped or zig zag route covering the full field, rather than a quick check near the gateway, avoids the bias of gateways and shaded field edges usually being under grazed relative to the rest of the field.
  2. Take a reading at regular intervals along that route. Roughly every twenty to thirty paces is typical, and the exact interval matters less than being consistent about it, so that readings from different weeks are genuinely comparable.
  3. Lower the stick or plate onto the sward without pressing down. The reading should reflect the sward settling naturally under its own weight or the plate's weight, not the surveyor pushing through it.
  4. Take enough readings to average out variation, typically twenty to thirty across a field. A handful of readings from one corner of the field will not represent genuine variation in cover across the whole area being grazed.
  5. Convert the average reading into an estimate, or use it directly to compare paddocks. Height readings can be converted to an estimated dry matter yield in kilograms per hectare using a calibration appropriate to the sward type, or simply compared paddock to paddock to decide which is ready for stock next and which needs longer to recover.
Comparing pre-grazing and post-grazing readings from the same paddock over a season builds a far more useful picture than any single reading, since it shows whether a rotation is actually achieving the rest periods it is designed around, or whether stock are returning to paddocks before cover has genuinely recovered.

This is the one field method in this series that most farmers running a rotational system already use in some form, but it is included here deliberately, because sward height data is exactly the kind of aboveground measurement that needs to sit alongside the belowground methods covered elsewhere in this series. Grazing intensity is defined by what happens above ground, but its consequences, for carbon, for nitrogen, for the soil food web, are measured below it, and neither half of that picture means much without the other.
